Matthew 21:42-44

Context

21:42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures:

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 1

This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? 2

21:43 For this reason I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people 3  who will produce its fruit. 21:44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls will be crushed.” 4

Matthew 22:29-32

Context
22:29 Jesus 5  answered them, “You are deceived, 6  because you don’t know the scriptures or the power of God. 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels 7  in heaven. 22:31 Now as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, 8  22:32I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 9  He is not the God of the dead but of the living!” 10

John 5:46-47

Context
5:46 If 11  you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me. 5:47 But if you do not believe what Moses 12  wrote, how will you believe my words?”

[21:42]  1 tn Or “capstone,” “keystone.” Although these meanings are lexically possible, the imagery in Eph 2:20-22 and 1 Cor 3:11 indicates that the term κεφαλὴ γωνίας (kefalh gwnia") refers to a cornerstone, not a capstone.

[21:42]  2 sn A quotation from Ps 118:22-23.

[21:43]  3 tn Or “to a nation” (so KJV, NASB, NLT).

[21:44]  4 tc A few witnesses, especially of the Western text (D 33 it sys Or Eussyr), do not contain 21:44. However, the verse is found in א B C L W Z (Θ) 0102 Ë1,13 Ï lat syc,p,h co and should be included as authentic.

[22:29]  5 tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said to them.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

[22:29]  6 tn Or “mistaken” (cf. BDAG 822 s.v. πλανάω 2.c.γ).

[22:30]  7 tc Most witnesses have “of God” after “angels,” although some mss read ἄγγελοι θεοῦ (angeloi qeou; א L Ë13 {28} 33 892 1241 1424 al) while others have ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ (angeloi tou qeou; W 0102 0161 Ï). Whether with or without the article, the reading “of God” appears to be motivated as a natural expansion. A few important witnesses lack the adjunct (B D Θ {0233} Ë1 700 {sa}); this coupled with strong internal evidence argues for the shorter reading.

[22:31]  8 tn Grk “spoken to you by God, saying.” The participle λέγοντος (legontos) is redundant here in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[22:32]  9 sn A quotation from Exod 3:6.

[22:32]  10 sn He is not God of the dead but of the living. Jesus’ point was that if God could identify himself as God of the three old patriarchs, then they must still be alive when God spoke to Moses; and so they must be raised.

[5:46]  11 tn Grk “For if.”

[5:47]  12 tn Grk “that one” (“he”); the referent (Moses) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
